Global economic growth started to decelerate on a broad front in mid-2011 and is estimated to have averaged 2.8 per cent over the last year. This economic slowdown is expected to continue into 2012 and 2013. For years, rag-pickers or scrap dealers have been a familiar sight in Indian towns and cities, going door-to-door and collecting all kinds of household waste - from newspapers to plastic and glass bottles.

India recorded a net loss of 367 sq km of forests between 2009 and 2011 with Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh alone losing 182 sq km of green cover in the period, the latest 'state of forest' report has found. In all, AP lost 281 sq km of forests in two years. Read on
